The “Duende lorchiano”. What`s the duende? And who owns it? Federico Garcìa Lorca, poet, shot in 1936 by the Francoist police said a few years before, in 1933, of the “duende” having provided it a great success: “The “duende” is that I do not know what possessed by artists (not all), the mysterious force that emanates the spirit of the Earth and you can feel it but you can not explain it, the thing that every artist would want for himself, and what bullfighters sometimes show in their movements, as well as painters, musicians, poets. It`s not a muse, it`s not an angel, but it is still something that takes hold, but that is already inside, in the most hidden rooms of the blood. The DUENDE is the sacred spirit that assails the bellies of poets and artists, it is the breath of Tango, or the Andalusian force that is released in flamenco; the act that moves the ethereal bodies of the masculine and the feminine without forcing or harassing possession. The DUENDE is something untranslatable, it is perhaps the charisma, energy or fascination that a person possesses. It`s something that is aroused in others without artifice or complacency, something that everyone perceives, recognizes, is to put it with him, an “energy that comes from under the feet as in certain dancers, or from the bottom of the throat as for certain singers” but is neither in the feet nor in the throat. “When an artist shows the DUENDE he has no more rivals” and “there`s no map nor exercise” to learn it, acquire it or understand where it is. |
